Elna Cardiology clinics have the privilege to work with the most eminent cardiologists, all specialized in cardiac ultrasound. They perform tests and follow state-of-the-art procedures to obtain the most accurate diagnoses possible.

Our cardiologists are committed to providing high quality and comprehensive medical service, always with patient care.

Medical Services

Here are the services offered by our cardiology clinics, in partnership with CDL Cardiology: consultation in cardiology, transthoracic ultrasound, exercise echocardiogram, ambulatory blood pressure monitor, cardiac monitor, cardiomemo and abdominal aortic aneurysm screening.

Cardiology Consultation
The CDL Cardiology Clinic offers consultations for a wide variety of heart conditions and symptoms, including chest pain, arrhythmia and palpitations, shortness of breath, and heart murmurs. We also provide screening for coronary artery disease (primary prevention) and established coronary artery disease (secondary prevention), as well as heart valve screening. These consultations are covered by the RAMQ.

Procedure:

  • Bring your doctor's medical prescription.
  • Have your health insurance card with you.
  • If you are taking medicines, please list them.
Transthoracic echocardiography
This exam is the most commonly prescribed in cardiology. Painless ultrasound waves are used to create an image of the chambers and valves of the heart. The cardiologist measures the dimensions and functioning of chambers and valves. Echocardiography is used to measure the pressure in the heart chambers.

Indications:

  • Evaluate the potential structural heart disease and heart murmurs
  • Evaluate hypertensive heart disease
  • Evaluate unexplained dyspnea, chest pain, palpitations or syncopations
  • Evaluate pulmonary hypertension in cases of pulmonary or valvular diseases

Procedure:

  • Bring your doctor's medical prescription.
  • If you are taking medicines, please list them.
Echocardiogram with exercise (Stress-Echo)
Stress-Echo is a test that combines a conventional stress test with images of the heart taken before and immediately after a stress test. Stress-Echo is considered more accurate than the treadmill exercise test.

Due to the lack of radiation and its speed of execution, this is one of the best tests to re-evaluate patients with abnormal stress or to identify "false positive" patient.

Indications:

  • Offers superior specificity and sensitivity when evaluating obstructive coronary heart disease
  • Global review of biventricular function including functional status and ischemic evaluation
  • This is the standard exam we recommend in case the patient has an abnormal pattern on his echocardiogram or to evaluate an echocardiogram with a possibly false positive result
  • Used when assessing pulmonary hypertension or arrhythmias caused by stress

Procedure:

  • Bring your doctor's medical prescription
  • Please bring with you comfortable clothing and sports shoes
  • If you are taking medicines, please list them.
  • Do not consume food two hours before your exam
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor (MAPA)
MAPA measures a person's blood pressure for a full day. Heart rate and blood pressure are measured at intervals of 20 to 30 minutes. The measurement is made using a mobile machine with an armband, that is attached to an arm and connected to a monitor that the person wears. This examination allows the physician to diagnose hypertension (a high risk factor for coronary heart disease and heart failure), to evaluate a therapy, and to distinguish between a patient with real hypertension and a patient with reaction hypertension. An anxious patient while in a doctor's office usually suffers from reaction hypertension.

All hypertensive patients may undergo a MAPA at least once when evaluating this condition.

Heart rate monitor (Holter, 24 hr)
A Holter is a small device worn for a period of 24 to 48 hours. The patient's heart rate is recorded continuously and analyzed by specialized software. This examination technique allows the detection of cardiac rhythm disorders such as palpitations, dizziness or fainting.

Indicated for evaluation of patients with symptoms that indicate arrhythmia, bradycardia or tachycardia. Also used to detect asymptomatic atrial fibrillation, especially in patients with ICT or stroke without identified cause.

Cardiomemo (10 days)
A cardiomemo is an event recorder: it records the heartbeat during symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness or loss of consciousness.

The cardiomemo is given to the patient for ten days, the goal being to maintain the usual activities so that the cardiologist can analyze the results recorded in the cardiomemo.
