Can you slow down the appearance of wrinkles?

Facial wrinkles are a common aesthetic concern for women and men alike. With age, skin loses its elasticity and firmness, but there are many ways to slow down this natural process.

In our article, discover how lifestyle habits and non-invasive treatments can contribute to the health and youthfulness of your skin.

Understanding facial wrinkles

A wrinkle is a sign of skin aging that manifests itself as a fold or break in the facial skin. It forms due to the loss of collagen and elastin, leading to a reduction in the skin’s elasticity and firmness. There are different types of wrinkle.

Dynamic wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles, also known as “expression lines”, are caused by repeated facial contractions (smiling, frowning and raising the eyebrows, blinking, etc.). They form in areas of the face where muscles are most active, such as the forehead, nasolabial folds, and the corners of the eyes and mouth.

Static wrinkles

Static wrinkles are caused by the aging of the skin. The production of collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin diminishes with age, leading to dehydration and sagging skin. Static wrinkles often form under the eyes, around the mouth, on the neck and décolleté.

Adopt healthy lifestyle habits

Opting for a healthy lifestyle is essential for fighting the appearance of wrinkles and preserving your overall health. Here’s a list of good habits to follow for the well-being of your skin:

  • Sun protection: UV rays accelerate skin aging by damaging collagen and elastin fibers. Using sunscreen (SPF) on a daily basis is one of the best ways to protect against facial wrinkles and other harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays. Find out how to choose the right sunscreen.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water every day stimulates tissue regeneration and strengthens the skin barrier. It also limits the appearance of dehydration lines. What’s more, using moisturizing cosmetics can contribute to skin elasticity.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Eating a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins (A, C and E) and essential fatty acids helps to combat free radicals, stimulate collagen production and moisturize the skin. Include in your meals a majority of fruits, vegetables, oily fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, etc.) and healthy oils (olive oil, avocado oil, etc.). Contact a dietician for more information.
  • Stop smoking and limit alcohol: Tobacco and alcohol reduce blood circulation, depriving the epidermis of essential nutrients. Reducing consumption of these substances can prevent the breakdown of collagen fibers. Smoking accentuates the folds around the mouth.
  • Sleep well: Quality sleep promotes cell regeneration, enabling the skin to produce collagen and repair itself. What’s more, a good night’s sleep improves blood circulation, providing your skin with the nutrients it needs.
  • Reduce stress: Stress increases the production of cortisol, a hormone that can break down the skin’s hyaluronic acid and collagen. Practicing relaxation exercises can help you relieve stress. If you are anxious by nature, don’t hesitate to consult a mental health professional.
  • Regular physical activity: Exercise improves blood circulation and oxygenation, contributing to skin radiance and health.
  • Adopt a skincare routine: Incorporating anti-aging products containing moisturizing ingredients into your routine can help reduce the signs of aging. Cleansing and removing make-up are also good reflexes to have.

Non-invasive treatments for wrinkles

Many men and women are turning to non-surgical aesthetic treatments to prevent the signs of ageing or reduce wrinkles already present.

  • Neuromodulator injections: Known under the brand names Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, neuromodulators are injected to relax facial muscles, thereby diminishing the appearance of dynamic fine lines and wrinkles. They are mainly used to reduce forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes and frown lines. Results last 3 to 6 months. Injections can be used as a preventive measure or to treat existing wrinkles.
  • Hyaluronic acid injections: Hyaluronic acid is a natural injectable product used to fill static wrinkles, restore facial volume and improve skin hydration. It is particularly effective in the areas around the eyes, mouth, cheekbones and eyebrows. Results last 6 to 18 months. It can also be done preventively to deeply hydrate the skin.
  • Laser treatments: Laser treatments stimulate collagen and elastin production, reduce age spots and improve skin texture. They deliver rapid results with minimal impact on daily life.

Consult an aesthetic clinic to find out which treatments may be right for you.

esthetic injections for wrinkles in a clinic by a doctor

Choosing an esthetic clinic in Montreal

Before making any esthetic treatment for wrinkles, it’s crucial to consider certain criteria to safeguard your health and avoid unpleasant surprises.

Start by requesting an initial in-clinic consultation with a qualified esthetic professional. The specialist will be able to assess your skin and medical history, identify any contraindications and propose a personalized treatment plan. If the treatment involves injections, make sure the consultation is carried out by a doctor. Ask any questions you may have, including about rest time and possible side effects.

After treatment, it’s essential to receive follow-up and post-treatment advice from your esthetic clinic. You can also consult testimonials and request before-and-after photos to check that the results are natural and live up to your expectations.
