What if 2024 was the year you finally focused on your health and wellness? Every new year brings with it an opportunity for renewal. In our article, discover some tips for living a healthy, balanced year!
Adopt healthy lifestyle habits
The key to good health lies in a healthy lifestyle:
- Balanced diet and good hydration: Opt for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Limit processed foods and opt for home-cooked meals. Remember to drink water regularly and limit alcohol and caffeine consumption. ELNA’s nutritionists can guide you toward food choices adapted to your individual needs.
- Regular physical activity: Regular exercise is essential for maintaining good health. Engage in a physical activity that you enjoy, whether it’s walking, swimming, yoga or dancing. Start gradually and increase intensity over time. The minimum targets for exercise should be 140 minutes per week.
- Restful sleep: Rest is crucial to physical and mental health. Establish a regular sleep routine, create an environment conducive to rest and give yourself enough sleep to feel revitalized.
- Limited screen time: Reduce the time you spend in front of screens. They have a detrimental impact on your sleep and mental health, especially in young children, where they can lead to developmental delays and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
Schedule a medical check-up with a family doctor
The beginning of the year is a good time to take stock of your health with a check-up. A medical check-up is much more than a simple medical consultation. It’s a comprehensive examination that assesses your current state of health and anticipates possible future problems.
It’s for anyone who wants to look after their long-term health, whatever their age, sex or current state of health. Adults can make regular check-ups whenever they want, though in Quebec, these are no longer covered by Medicare. For children who are 5 years of age or under, check-ups should be carried out according to a specific schedule. Consult your child’s doctor or family doctor for more information.
During this check-up, your doctor performs in-depth physical examinations, blood tests and discusses your situation (history, medication, lifestyle habits, etc.) to detect any abnormalities or early signs of disease. This process helps to identify potential health problems at an early stage, offering the possibility of early intervention and effective treatment.
Health check-ups are offered in most of ELNA’s clinics. For a quick appointment, contact a private clinic.
Plan your annual visits to specialists
Taking care of your health also means regular visits to specialist doctors such as your gynecologist, dermatologist or dentist. The frequency of visits depends on your age and medical history. However, here is a list of the most important check-ups recommended for adults, to prevent certain illnesses.
For everyone :
- Dermatological consultation: Every year, to have your moles examined and limit the risk of skin cancer.
- Screening for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Adults who have been in a high-risk situation. Learn more.
- Colorectal cancer screening: Every 2 years for adults aged 50 to 74.
- Dental cleaning: Every 6 months. Learn more.
- Eye exam: Every year if you have vision problems.
For women:
- Gynecological consultation: A pelvic exam is recommended very year for most women, for a smear test to detect any infections or cancerous cells. Learn more.
- Cervical cancer screening (HPV): Every 5 years, for women aged 25 to 65. This can be done at the same time as your gynecological examination. Learn more.
- Breast cancer screening: Women aged 50 to 69 should have a screening mammogram every 2 years. Learn more.
For men:
- Prostate cancer screening: For men aged 55 to 69. Learn more.
To make an initial appointment with a specialist affiliated to the RAMQ, you must first obtain a referral from a family doctor. You don’t need a referral for a private specialist (not covered by the RAMQ).
Taking charge of your mental health
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Taking care of your emotional well-being is essential to living a balanced life. Here are some recommendations:
- Practice mindfulness: Meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness can help reduce stress and improve mental health. Learn to be present in the moment and deal with negative thoughts.
- Consult a mental health professional: Mental health should not be a taboo subject. If you feel the need, consider making an appointment with a psychologist, psychiatrist or family doctor, who can advise you on treatments adapted to your situation. Discover our mental health clinic.
Take time for yourself
Taking time for yourself is essential for a balanced life. Investing in wellness activities can go a long way toward your happiness and fulfillment. At ELNA Medical, we recommend:
