Pediatric Audiology

Do you have questions about the health of your child’s ears? If so, you may need to see a pediatric audiologist. Audiologists are specialists in diagnosing, treating, and preventing hearing and vestibular disorders.

At ELNA Medical, your children are in good hands with experts you can trust.

A consultation with an audiologist may be required for any of the following reasons:

  • Concerns about your child’s hearing
  • Language or developmental delay
  • History of ear infections/otitis
  • Family history of hearing loss
  • Specific medical conditions or learning problems.

Regardless of the reason for your visit, you can count on our hearing health professionals to provide you and your child with exceptional care.

Our clinics offer hearing evaluations, including screening tests for newborns (to determine the presence of a hearing impairment) and comprehensive hearing tests for children and teenagers.

What happens during a consultation with a pediatric audiologist?

Newborn Hearing Screening
This test can determine whether your child has hearing loss. Don’t worry, the examination is neither painful nor uncomfortable.

The audiologist places a small earphone-like device in the baby’s ear that emits a sound. If the ear responds with an echo, it means that all structures are working as they should. If your child does not pass the test, they may be required to seek an evaluation by an ENT specialist. Results are available as soon as the test is completed.

Hearing assessment for children
The hearing assessment takes place in the form of various games adapted to your child’s stage of development. Your child is given a soundproof booth where he or she will listen to sounds of varying pitch and intensity. They will then be asked to perform a specific task, such as throwing blocks into a basket, each time he or she hears a sound. Our audiologist focuses on the lowest frequency sounds they are able to perceive.

We will explain the results and make any necessary recommendations following the examination. Once the assessment has been completed, you will be informed as to the status of your child’s hearing. We will also advise whether a consultation with another hearing health professional such as a speech therapist, hearing aid specialist or ENT specialist is required.

Pediatric Speech Therapy

Our team of skilled speech-language pathologists offers assessment and intervention services aimed at identifying and treating speech disorders and language difficulties. Our mission is to develop, restore or maintain your child’s communication skills while promoting their autonomy and integration into social life.

Montreal Speech Therapy LogoPatients requiring treatment from a speech and language therapist usually have difficulties with speaking or understanding. They may also have voice problems, as well as problems with writing, reading, swallowing, feeding and other related issues. Whatever the complexity of your needs, our expert speech and language therapists always take the time to consider your overall situation in order to provide you with the best possible treatment.

Our speech and language therapists work with other health and educational professionals to provide you with the information and support you need. Our expertise, passion and dedication to your child’s well-being make ELNA a leader in speech therapy and language stimulation.

Children are first seen for a consultation with their parents and a certified speech and language pathologist (SLP). The SLP will screen the child’s language using informal testing, observation and play to assess the child’s current language level. The sessions last between 45-50 mins. including a discussion with the parents on strategies and recommendations. The parent will receive a short written report 2 weeks after their consultation.

All patients requesting speech therapy services are asked to fill out a form. In order to receive the form to fill in, please indicate your email and child’s name below.

Follow up sessions can be booked below or directly at the reception after the session. It is recommended to book for the month in advance so parents don’t lose their preferred time slot. SLPs will inform the parents whether follow up is recommended and whether a full evaluation is warranted to further assess the child’s language. Referrals can also be made by SLPs to other professionals depending on the child’s specific needs and situation.

If a parent would like daycare forms filled out by an SLP, the child needs to complete both a consultation and a block of therapy before forms can be completed and returned to parents. Our team needs to be able to determine if the child’s language difficulties are significant and persistent based on the child’s response to intervention.

If a child has already been seen at ELNA Medical for a consultation but has not returned for over 6 months, a new consultation must be completed before going back into therapy. If a new child comes with an updated evaluation from another clinic or school all information must to be provided when arriving at the session in order to keep files updated and therapy may commence without a consultation on a case by case basis.

Vasectomy

The testicles produce sperm that passes through two tubes called the vas deferens to the urethra.

Vasectomy involves cutting and blocking the vas deferens. By doing this, the semen ejaculated during sexual intercourse no longer contains sperm.

At Montreal Urology, our expert Dr. Shuker uses the no-scalpel vasectomy technique. Unlike the so-called conventional vasectomy, which requires two incisions and the use of a needle and scalpel, the no-scalpel vasectomy requires neither of the latter. Dr. Shuker gains access to the vas deferens by making a tiny opening. There are many advantages to a scalpel-free vasectomy including: less pain, less risk of infection, and faster healing. If your work does not require any strenuous physical exertion, you will be able to return safely 48 hours following the procedure. If that isn’t the case, you will need to rest for about a week.

No-scalpel vasectomy procedure

The no-scalpel vasectomy is performed under local anesthesia. The doctor uses a micro-needle that is roughly the size of a hair. You will feel almost no pain during the procedure. Using a special tool, the doctor makes a tiny opening in the scrotum (the pocket of skin that surrounds and protects the testicles) and removes the vas deferens. These are then blocked and cut. No stitches are required.

The procedure itself takes about 15 minutes, but you should plan for a 25-to-30-minute appointment. At the end of the procedure, we will give you a container and an instruction sheet for a spermogram to be taken 2 to 3 months following your vasectomy.
