Dr. Johnston was born in Yorkshire, England. In 1952, he moved to Manchester to study at Stand Grammar School and Victoria University of Manchester where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. In 1971, he graduated in obstetrics from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecology in London, England.
A year later, he started his career as a general practitioner at the Anglo American Corporation. In 1975, Dr. Johnston graduated in anesthesia from the Royal College of Surgeons. He subsequently practiced rural medicine in Dayton, Alberta for 17 years. Outside of work, Dr. Johnston enjoys the guitar and theatre.
