Biography

Dr. Emil is:
  • A pediatric surgeon at The Montréal Children’s Hospital
  • The Mirella and Lino Saputo Foundation Chair in Surgical Education and Patient and Family-Centered Care at the McGill University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences;
  • The Associate Chair for Education in the McGill Department of Pediatric Surgery.
He served as Director of the Harvey E. Beardmore Division of Pediatric Surgery at The Montréal Children’s from 2008 to 2024. During those years, his leadership and vision propelled pediatric surgery at the Children’s to become the leader in Canada in clinical care, education, and research. He created a number of new clinical and academic programs which have garnered national and international attention, and pioneered many innovative procedures. His research has generated more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and changed practice in many areas of pediatric surgery. He founded and served as the inaugural chair of the Canadian Consortium for Research in Pediatric Surgery (CanCORPS), an organization which has changed the landscape of pediatric surgery research in Canada. Dr. Emil is a passionate educator and is dedicated to bringing education to all corners of the globe. He is the author of “Clinical Pediatric Surgery”, currently the leading textbook in the field and the first pediatric surgery textbook to originate from Canada. He is also dedicated to global surgical work, having volunteered to provide clinical services and education in 10 African nations, and currently serving as the Pediatric Surgery Specialty Consultant for Mercy Ships International. His work here and around the world has been widely featured in the media. However, of all his engagement, Dr. Emil’s first and most important commitment is to patient care. He calls this the “bookends of medicine”, reminding his students and colleagues that this is where medicine starts and ends, with everything else standing in the middle.
